Everyone wants the status that comes with an Amex Gold or Platinum card, but are they really the best suited cards for your needs? While they hold prestigious and luxurious benefits, they also have high annual fees, while other cards have no annual fees and offer just as much, if not more, depending on what you need, of course.
Amex Cash Blue:
Amex Cash Blue:
Rewards:
- 6% Cash back at U.S. Supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases.
- 6% Cash back on select U.S. Streaming subscriptions.
- 3% Cash back at U.S. Gas stations and on transit.
- 1% Cash back on all other purchases.
The Amex blue card is another star in the American Express lineup, and even competes with the Amex gold card!
Even though the Amex Blue is less flashy, its rewards are perfect for those in single households, who just want the individual benefits, outside of travel.
Currently, when you open up an Amex blue cash preferred card, you will receive $250 in credit after spending $3000 in the first 6 months. This will come as a form of credit to reduce the amount on your statement for that month by $250.
American expresses Cash preferred card is ideal for use in U.S. Supermarkets, U.S. Streaming services and U.S. Gas stations.
Amex Gold:
While the Amex Gold and Amex Platinum cards are all status driven Credit Cards, meaning that there is a hype around the exclusiveness of the cards, are they really the best?
For example, the Amex Gold Card, when compared to the Cash preferred Blue Card, is less beneficial to most.
Take a look!
The conversion between points and cash back are in terms of percentages. So, if you get 4x the points on membership rewards, it would be nearly equivalent to 4% cash back.
If you have a family that you take care of and purchase groceries for and dine out with, the Amex Gold option would be more suited for you. This is because the Amex gold has 4x the rewards for groceries up to $25,000, which is well above the yearly amount for a family of 4 in the U.S. but when compared to the Amex Blue, with a $6,000 limit on 6x cash back for groceries, it really depends on the families budget.
Our Recommendation:
If you’re solely taking care of yourself and one other, the Amex Blue might be the best option for groceries and dining out, over the Amex Gold.
If you have a larger family, host a lot of parties, eat out more often, we recommend the Amex Gold card. Seeing as you can get rewards with a larger spending capacity, as long as you spend enough to make it worth while, the Amex gold is top tier. The downside is the $295 annual fee compared to the $0 annual fee for the Amex blue
